Stop Waiting for Motivation

The world is full of people who are waiting for someone to come along and motivate them to be the kind of people they wish they could be. The problem is that no one is coming to the rescue.

These people are waiting for a bus on a street where no buses pass. If they don’t take charge of their lives and put pressure on themselves, they can end up waiting forever. And that is what most people do.

— Brian Tracy

You are an expert at being who you are right now. So am I, and so is everyone else. We are all creatures of habit and products of the environments we have created or accepted. For most of us, we don’t even have to try to be ourselves anymore. It is just who we are.

But what does that mean when we say we want to be someone else? Maybe you want something different for your life than what you have now. You may have goals and hopes and dreams. All of these are fantastic things but they will all require you to change.

When it comes to changing our lives, that takes work. It requires effort and discomfort. It requires you to work hard at being or doing something that does not yet feel natural. And this is where too many of us quit. We see the hill we have to climb and we sit idly at the bottom, dreaming we were at the top. We may wish someone else could carry us up the mountainside. Or at very least, we want someone or something to come and force us to make the climb.

The problem is that no one is going to force you to change. No one is coming to save the day. I am responsible for myself. And you are responsible for you. If we are going to grow and improve and achieve our hopes and dreams, we each need to put in the work.

This does not mean there is not room for helping and encouraging each other along the way. There is much that we can do to lift and assist others along the way. But when it comes to personal progress and growth, no one else can do it for you. So put on your hiking shoes, make a plan and start to climb the mountain before you. The view from the top is worth the price you have to pay to get there.

What dreams are you waiting on? What can you do today to start working on them?
