The Law of Inertia

Our faith increases as we choose to believe rather than doubt, forgive rather than judge, repent rather than rebel.

I have always been fascinated by the relationships between natural laws and spiritual laws. One such relationship I find very insightful is the Law of Inertia or Newton’s First Law of Motion.

The Law of Inertia states that an object will stay in its current state unless acted upon by external forces. A billiard ball remains stationary until it collides with another ball. A speeding car will continue moving until the driver applies the brakes.

When something is small or moving very slowly, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to stop it. But when something is massive or moving very fast, it can take an immense amount of force to slow it down or change its direction. It is easy to see how this law plays out in the physical world that surrounds us. We can see it at play as we interact daily with the physical world. But I believe this law is just as applicable in other areas of our lives. Just as the physical objects around us obey the Law of Inertia, the spiritual aspects of our lives also obey this law.

In a spiritual sense, we are all objects in motion. We all have spiritual momentum. Each of us learn line upon line and we grow or shrink by degrees. We build or destroy this spiritual momentum bit by bit with each and every decision we make. Day by day and decision by decision we are either increasing or decreasing our spiritual momentum.

This means we can increase or decrease our faith and spiritual strength. We have a choice. We choose, through our actions, whether we will increase our faith or decrease it. With each of our decisions we can build our faith and draw closer to our Heavenly Father.

What is one thing you can do today to build your faith and draw closer to your Heavenly Father?
