Practice Makes Progress

That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that our power to do is increased.

— Heber J. Grant

Like many families, our home is often full of music. Some of my favorite music in our home is the sound of my children practicing the piano.

When my children practice piano it is often full of stops and starts, misplayed notes and inconsistent tempo. Despite the general chaotic nature of the music my children play while practicing, it still is some of my favorite music to hear. This is not because I like to suffer, but rather because it reminds me of the power of practice.

There are often times when my children are practicing a piece of music for a recital. When they first start practicing the piece, it is always painful and broken. But as they continue to practice over days, weeks and even months, that broken music consistently transforms into something beautiful.

Just like a child practicing a musical instrument, we can all leverage the power of practice in our efforts to learn, grow and improve. As we practice, we can transform our inability to master and our weaknesses into strengths.

We may feel that the challenges we are facing have become simple, but that is not what has happened. When we practice it is not the challenges that change, but our abilities and capabilities that have become stronger.

We can all approach the challenges in our lives with full confidence in our ability to succeed when we take the time to practice and improve.

When have you seen your abilities grow through practice? How can you better apply practice in your daily life?
