Under Construction

Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they’re finished.

— Daniel Gilbert

Who are you? Who do you think your really are on the inside? If you are like most people, you just feel that you are you — the same you, you have always been. But, deep down, you know this is not true.

When you take time to reflect on who you were one, five or ten years ago, you can see the changes — often dramatic changes — that have experienced. Your tastes and style, your preferences and hobbies, your virtues and hopes all change as we learn and grow.

Yet, even though you can easily see how much you have changed from who you were in the past, it is often hard for us to see our potential to change and grow in the future. We can feel like we are who we are, like we have arrived and like we will stay who we are forever more. But we are not complete. We are all works in progress.

Just as we have changed from who we were in the past, we can continue to change and grow in the future. We are not finished, but we are works in progress. And we can continue to grow and improve until we have overcome all our weaknesses and truly are complete.

Think of who you were one, five or ten years ago. How have you changed from who you were then and what does that tell you about how you might change in the next one, five or ten years?
