Chip Away

It is not daily increase but daily decrease; hack away the unessential.

— Bruce Lee

When the pandemic hit last year, the world was flipped on its head as the everything closed. Lives were put on hold. Many of the daily distractions we had crammed into our lives were forcibly removed. For many of us, we found our lives suddenly and dramatically simplified. The unessential was removed practically overnight.

As we have started to emerge from the pandemic, life has started to return to normal. This has been a breathe of fresh air for many of us. There are so many aspects of life that were missed and are now coming back again.

While this is exciting, it is worth taking the time to consider which unessential things we are going to let back in to our lives. Which distractions really add value? Which are still just a complete waste of time?

Just because something is available is not enough reason to give it our time.

When we are deliberate about what distractions we allow in our lives, we can have so much more time to spend on things that truly add value. Statues are made not by adding more, but by removing everything that does not belong. Just like a breathe-taking statue, our lives can become a thing of beauty as we remove the unessential.

Which unessential things from your pre-pandemic life are you going to let back in? Which are you going to leave out?
